RegistryPro

About

Approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in May 2002, RegistryPro is the exclusive operator of the .Pro Top-Level Domain (TLD) name. RegistryPro, the first registry to deliver enhanced security through the issuance of digital certificates, also requires Registrants to self-certify their professional status in order to obtain .Pro domain and digital certificate bundled solutions.

Challenge

ICANN requires registry operators, such as RegistryPro, to store copies of confidential registrant data by depositing incremental backups with a third party escrow agent in order to assure business continuity. In the unlikely event a registry operator is unable to support its customers, ICANN must have the ability to restore the registry's operation quickly in order to maintain the operational integrity of the Internet.

Adding to this challenge was RegistryPro's business model of delivering enhanced security services through the issuance of domains with bundled digital certificates and online passports. As .Pro is the secure TLD of choice for the professional community, RegistryPro needed to select a proven vendor that not only provided scalable Business Continuity Services but also had IT Security within its core competency.

"We required a partner that has security at the heart of its business and understood the critical nature of our business environment," commented Phillip Vandenbergh, Director of Information Technology for RegistryPro.

Solution

Following a review of the marketplace, RegistryPro chose to partner with the world's largest software escrow provider, NCC Group, for this business continuity solution.

"NCC Group has an outstanding reputation and offered us a completely scalable and accessible solution," said Catherine Sigmar, general manager of RegistryPro. "With this partnership, customers are assured that RegistryPro is committed to securing their information according to the industry's best practices."

Under the terms of its partnership, NCC Group holds copies of RegistryPro's up to date registry information. To ensure confidentiality, RegistryPro uses high-level encryption to transfer its registry data securely to NCC Group's servers on a daily schedule.

NCC Group then verifies the format and consistency of the registry information in accordance with ICANN's requirements and securely stores the information in its data centers, guaranteeing its availability to ICANN if necessary. Once this validation test is completed, NCC Group sends out automated reports to RegistryPro and ICANN confirming that the registry deposit has been received and validated in accordance with ICANN's requirements. NCC Group also produces automated reports to communicate when deposits are not received in accordance with the established schedule, or when they fail the validation. This assists RegistryPro with monitoring whether they are compliant with their contractual obligations.

Results

In the unlikely event that RegistryPro is unable to support its community in the future, its customers have peace of mind that it has done everything necessary to insure the ongoing, efficient operation of their registry.

"By establishing a comprehensive escrow solution with NCC Group, RegistryPro is clearly demonstrating its commitment to supporting its customers' operations," commented Craig Motta, General Manager, NCC Group. "In knowing that this critical contingency has been covered, it leaves RegistryPro to concentrate on their corebusiness."
