Commenting on the Prime Minister’s speech at London Tech Week outlining plans to develop sovereign computing capabilities in the UK, Kat Sommer, Director of Government Affairs & Analyst Relations at NCC Group said:
“The Prime Minister’s commitment to developing sovereign computing capabilities reflects the Government’s recognition that AI is a strategic technology with implications for both economic growth and national security.
“However, sovereignty should not be confused with isolationism. Building sovereign computing capabilities is not about pulling up the drawbridge or attempting to replicate every part of the AI stack domestically. It is about reducing overreliance in critical areas, strengthening resilience, and ensuring the UK retains meaningful control over the technologies that underpin its economy and public services.
“The UK already has significant strengths in cyber security, assurance and advanced technologies. Promoting sovereign AI should therefore be about building on these foundations, investing in domestic capability where it matters most, and continuing to work closely with trusted international partners.”
