Manx Telecom is a leading communication solutions provider based on the Isle of Man. Its operations touch the lives of almost every individual and business on the island.

NCC Group worked closely with Manx Telecom to improve the preparedness of its DDoS strategy by testing its mitigation solution with DDoS Testing, part of NCC Group’s DDoS Assured suite of services.

Challenge

In the early part of 2014, Manx Telecom had suspicions that it had been the victim of a DDoS attack. Due to legacy hardware issues, it was unable to gain a full understanding of the suspected breach as it was impossible to capture the traffic for analysis. However, it was aware that some of its customers had been the victim of low-volume attacks in recent months.

Following the suspicious behavior, Manx Telecom invested heavily in a new DDoS Mitigation solution to better protect its own corporate infrastructure and that of its customers. The system was procured to ensure it was scalable to support future bandwidth demands for the foreseeable future and was monitored 24/7 by a dedicated Network Operations Centre (NOC) team.

Following the investment it had made, Manx Telecom wanted independent assurance that its mitigation system would react appropriately in the event of an attack.

Solution

NCC Group provided Manx Telecom with DDoS Testing, creating an independent environment for their DDoS Mitigation system to be fully tested by emulating a real-life DDoS attack against various targets in their external facing infrastructure. The testing allowed Manx Telecom to determine whether the mitigation system that it had in place was effective in detecting and preventing a DDoS attack.

Various attack vectors were used during the testing, including DNS, HTTP, and HTTPS flooding. NCC Group initially identified weaknesses in the configuration of the system, which Manx Telecom was able to identify and remediate before the system was re-tested.

All attack vectors generated during testing were successfully mitigated.NCC Group’s DDoS Testing is part of its DDoS Assured suite of services, which also includes DDoS Advisory, which provides guidance on all aspects of a company’s DDoS strategy, and DDoS Fire Drill, a service that tests the reactions of an organization’s staff against current procedures and policies.

Result

Manx Telecom received an independent set of test and validation results that can be used internally and externally to help communicate to potential customers. It has now improved its DDoS Solution by deploying equipment that is able to detect and mitigate application layer attacks.
